Document Required to Clear your Car in Nigeria Tincan & Apapa Port

CAR IMPORTATION AND CUSTOM CLEARING !!!

Copy of Bill of Lading

Whether you're contracting entire Auto-shipping project to a freight broker and or freight agent, its important that you familiarize yourself with commonly used / required document.

For clearing of your car out of Lagos Seaport (Tincan) or (Apapa), below would be required by your clearing agent;

• Bill of Lading
• Means of Identification

Definition of Document 

• Bill of Lading: A bill of lading is a legal document between the shipper of goods (could be Car) and the carrier detailing the type, quantity and destination of the goods being carried. The bill of lading also serves as a receipt of shipment when the goods are delivered at the predetermined destination. Bill of Lading is usually abbreviated as B/L or BoL.

• Means of Identification: This is a name that may be used, alone or in combination with any other information, to identify a specific individual, including any name, social security number, date of birth, official State or government issued driver's license or National identification card.

• How do i get Bill of lading: A freight forwarder and or approved cargo agent at the goods (or Car) originated city / country will provide you a scan copy for your approval. The reason is to make sure that information filled in the blank copy are accurate in order to avoid issues with clearing agencies at the port of discharge. Once you approve the scan copy, your Auto-freight forwarder will then send you hard copy of the bill of lading by courier service since original copy of BL will be required for clearing by custom and other port operators.  

• Will bill of Lading cost me money: Yes. BofL will cost you token. I am sure your freight forwarder would add up to your freight shipping invoice. Bill of Lading will cost $50 in most countries.

• What should i do when i receive my Bill of Lading: Its very good to receive your BL some few days prior Vessel arrival in country of discharge. When you receive your Bill of Laden, it is important that you separate them and then append your signature to the original copy of bill of lading;

  Note: Bill of lading will come in four copies as;

• 1. Non-Negotiable
• 2. Original

After signing on the Original copy, you may now hand them to the agent with your means of identity. 

• Why Should I Give Clearing Agent My Means of Identity: It is very important to provide an identity of you in order to claim your goods and to confirm the name and the address of the consignee on the B/L
