Groupage can be defined as any general goods that are shipped
from different consignee in the same container to the same port of discharge (POD).
This method of shipment is easy and it’s mostly effective
and convenient for smaller weight cargoes that cannot be shipped in a full
container or when the consignee cannot afford a full container shipment.
Groupage is also known as (LCL) less than container load; it
is also called consolidation in air freighting.
For instance you want to ship a used machine or any personal
item appliances; firstly you will know the actual weight by scale or any means
of measurement. If it is packed inside or with a wood it is called crating,
that is when you use dimensional weight because the freight forwarder or shipping line
will use dimensional weight to calculate the measurement and to provide the
quotation for the shipment.
Most country doesn’t do groupage because they don’t have
enough traffic or order from their country to your country as the case may be.
In a situation where by your cargo is been combined with
other people’s cargo to be shipped to the same destination port (POD), This can
take little longer than a direct shipping.
It can only be faster when your cargo is late or was loaded
last or in a situation where there was no trans-loading.
