Physical Examination of Containers is monotonous, says Onne Customs Controller


The Comptroller General, Abubakar Bashir, Port Harcourt Area II Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Onne, has denounced the abnormal state of physical examination of cargo containers in Nigeria, tagged it as "monotonous" and not really effective as most containers are machine-parked at cargo origin.


Bashir said that manual un-stuffing of containers for physical examination is loaded with hordes of difficulties, faulting the circumstance for the non-availability of scanners at the sea port.

He said regardless of these difficulties, the command could generate the total sum of N44.7billion as import duty and N19.6 million from export, continues in the principal half of the year.

He further explained that, the import income was higher than the sum gathered inside the comparing time of 2016 by N177.8 million.

Bashir depicted the Onne command as the leader of the Nigeria Customs Service in the South-South and South-East zones of the nation. 


In terms of anti-smuggling, he said, 20 seizures has been recorded so far; involving 18 units of 20-feet containers and two units of 40-feet containers with the estimated duty of N422.8 million that said to be payed.
