Custom Agents Accuse Shipping Firms of Violating WTO Convention

The National Council of Managing Directors of Licensed Customs Agents (NCMDLCA) has approached the Federal government to find a way to stop the current extra charges by delivery organizations called government and port assessments.

As per the NCMDLCA, the transportation firms are damaging the arrangement of the Convention of World Trade Organization (WTO) Articles VIII 3(b).

In a request of tended to the Minister of Transportation, RotimiAmaechi and marked by its national president, Mr. Fortunate Amiwero, NCMDLCA said the extra dispatching charges was presented through a round issued by transportation organizations to their clients dated the 28th of October 2016, which they have begun to actualize.

The traditions specialists included that the expansion inscribed 'Government and Port Taxes' is charged at N38,000 per holder with no administration mediation in accordance with the arrangement of the authoritative instruments and the reminder of comprehension (MoU) marked by all partners.

The arrangement of the law approve the bearer to hand over the merchandise to the proctor at the port of release with no cost, as all cost are encapsulated in the cargo paid by shipper in view of the law.

As indicated by him, "Whatever other charges presented by the transportation organizations, contradicts the arrangement of the Convention of WTO Articles VIII 3(b), the local laws and control, the practice constitutes high rate of charges that is not fixing to administration, which is a contributory element to the high clearing cost that require the redirection of Nigerian bound vessels to neighboring West African Ports."
