Importers, Agents Seeking Review of Port Charges

More than 70% importers at Seme and Idiroko border have condemned the charges they pay at the seaports.
They need the Federal Government to survey the charges paid to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to make the ports encouraging.

The importers' representative, Mr Kayode Adesanya, mourned that the importers were troubled with the charges, which incorporate Customs'Import Duty, Surcharges, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS), and Value Added Tax (VAT).

On each 20ft and 49ft compartment imported from China, the Customs gets the biggest share of installments during clearance.

The legal counselor to the Motor Vehicle Importers Association at Idiroko outskirt, Mr Felix Alakija, recognized five charges that Customs gathers.

He stated: "They are transportation organizations and terminal administrators charges, clearing specialists charges, Customs duty and the truck proprietors charges."For occurrence, if a 20ft holder is loaded with cargo worth N33million and it remains inside the ports for four day, then the shipper will pay an aggregate of N4.8million, utilizing the conversion standard of one dollar to N330. The installment covers from when the container left its port of source in China to its last goal in Nigeria.

"A breakdown of the N4.8million paid for four days by the shipper to all administrators at the port demonstrates that the delivery organization gets 13.8% of the sum as cargo; the terminal administrators gathers 1.4 %; the Customs gathers 81.7%; the clearing operator gets 1.7% and the truck proprietor/haulage driver gathers 1.4% of the sum.
