FG Shuts Apapa Bridge Today for Reconstruction (7th April 2017)


The Apapa-bound carriageway of the Apapa Marine Beach Bridge will be shut today (Friday) for 29 days due to the ongoing reconstruction of the bridge, said the site Manager, Simon Barakat. This implies workers going into Apapa from the Ijora end will battle with overwhelming traffic gridlock.


Barakat, on location on Thursday,seek road users for an alternative routes.
We will close the Apapa-bound carriageway on Friday night and it will remain blocked till May 8 2017.

"We kindly advice drivers to drive slowly and careful, more so to be cautious  utilizing the diversions and regard traffic signs to check gridlock.

"Truck drivers should stay away and avoid breakdowns during this period by keeping up their vehicles cleaned up,'' he said.
The contractors handling the project, said that two alternative diversions had been made to deflect gridlock.

He said that the repair done on the Ijora/Lagos-bound carriageway was being repeated on the Apapa-bound carriageway, including that the foundation work under the bridge had been finished.

"We are marking, cutting and doing the planning to begin to prestressed the bridge; this offers quality to the bridge, he said.

"Bridge need to be scaffold to rearrange the links and cast concrete on it again to set it up for the following phase of development which will be installation of heading,'' he said.

He said that after the 29 days, the following phase of repairs would be the substitution of heading on both carriageways which, he stated, would take 40 days on each side.

Bola Suleiman of the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, a specialist administering the venture, said that all the movement administration offices had been prepared to guarantee free stream of activity during the conclusion.

"The movement administration organizations are all mindful; we settled on the choice together at our partners' meeting; they will occupy activity coming to Apapa through Ajegunle and Mobil Road,'' she said.

Suleiman said that the service was filling potholes on Burma Road to secure free movement. The Marine Beach Bridge was harmed by flame around 10 years years.

Contract for repair of the scaffold was granted in 2012 however the temporary worker surrendered the venture because of assets limitation.

The temporary workers moved back to site on March 5 to start the repair works.

The Ijora/Lagos-bound carriageway was opened to light traffic on March 26 after the principal period of work was done on the carriageway.
