Further more in his speech titled: 'Changing and reforming the oil and gas industry in Nigeria' at the continuous Nigeria Oil and Gas conference in Abuja on Tuesday.
Kachikwu said it was a disgrace Nigeria had been bringing in completed petroleum items for a considerable length of time and said the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) must meet its objective of consummation petroleum items' importation in the period of 2018 and 2019.
He stated: "Importation of petroleum items should stop. There's definitely no motivation behind why a nation with the assets that we have will keep on importing petroleum items. It is a disgrace on this nation, it is a misrepresentation on the framework and we will end it.
"We are focused on the 2018/2019 layout, since it is something we need to do. The refineries are not performing to limit and it won't be simple, however we need to end importation of petroleum items.
"On the off chance that we do that, the downstream will survive; yet in the event that we don't, then by the principal quarter of 2020, the Dangote refinery will go ahead board. What's more, if that happens, it then means we will have scraps in our grasp as refineries. In this manner, there's the earnestness of now to end importation."
