Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) slams Customs policy on imported vehicles


The Nigerian labour congress (NLC) has hammered the Nigerian Customs service duty policy on vehicles claiming it is unrealistic.



The Customs had undermined to seize and arraign vehicle proprietors who neglect to pay customs duties on imported vehicles at the very latest 12th April 2017.

This choice has however been denounced by the Nigerian Senate, which requested the administration to censure the policy and show up before its board of committee on Customs.

The NLC in an announcement marked by its Leader, Ayuba Wabba lauded the administration implementing tax payment however included that the new policy "is strategically unfeeling and will make unbelievable tumult and languishing over honest vehicle end-users."

The labour chairman additionally recorded various difficulties, which the policy may force on Nigerian.

He stated below:

Our consideration has been attracted to a press statement dated on Tuesday, march 2, 2017 and marked by Mr. Joseph Attah, Acting public relation Officer for the benefit of the Specialist General coordinating "every single car dealers and private owners" of vehicle "whose customs duty has not been paid, to do as such", between Monday, march 13th and Wednesday, April 12, 2017 as "there will be a forceful anti-smuggling operation to seize and additionally prosecute owners of such smuggled vehicles after the due date of Wednesday 12th of April 2017".

From the statement, guided vehicle owners to Customs Zonal commands in Lagos, Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Bauchi to have their vehicles guaranteed to verify if Customs duties has been paid.

We are all mindful that one of the statutory elements of the Nigerian Customs Administration is to gather impose in the interest of the legislature, generally as duty on vehicles. The citizenry, both corporate and non-corporate, as a feature of their community and business duties are relied upon to pay fitting duties on their vehicles as requested by the law.

Unfortunately, some out of unworthiness or sheer culpability ways and methods for avoiding this custom. For example, some take measures as frantic as "flying" their vehicles into the nation, subsequently denying government the required income.
